Ice Horse Riders Share their Holiday Traditions

December 24, 2014

Everyone enjoys the Holidays and a big part of the memories are the traditions that come with the season. We asked several of our sponsored riders to share what makes the holidays special for them and here is what they told us:

Olympian Gina Miles writes:

“The Holidays are a big deal for my family!  We try to make it down to Disneyland sometime during the season to see the Christmas decorations.  This year we were able to go right before Thanksgiving.  I always love Disneyland, but when it is decorated for the holidays, it is extra special... I especially love the holiday firework show and "snow" on Main Street.  One year we were able to get the whole barn together to go right after New Year’s and that was really fun.

We get our tree from a family friends ‘Choose and Cut Lot’.  We have a super tall ceiling, so the taller the tree the better!  And love to get the lights up on the house as soon after Thanksgiving as possible.

We are also all big skiing/snowboarding fans, and this year we actually have snow!  So we will try to fit some snow time in also.”

On the other side of the pond Lucinda Frederick’s celebrates in traditional British style.  “ Christmas Eve is all about getting the stockings out, the table laid in advance and getting the music going.  There are a lot of chocolates and carrots in the yard and we have a staff party and celebration in the house.

Ellie my daughter is into dressing up Cola (our dog) in a Santa outfit.  Our Christmas day involves all the normal trimmings and a massive meal with 16 friends and family." Here is the Fredericks' Christmas Card with Lucinda, daughter Ellie, and their pooch, Cola:

Tom McCutcheon Reining recoups from the hustle and bustle of the NRHA Futurity by giving their staff a well-deserved break. “We stagger time off so our staff can relax and can spend time with their families and our clients are treated to a special “invitation only” Christmas party.”

Tom's WEG 2014 partner, Dun Git a Nicadual, was only invited if he promised to dress as a reindeer and he definitely didn't want to miss out...

At Revolution Farm, Joie Gatlin tells us:

“We’ve always tried to work in a barn party to celebrate the holidays, but last year we hosted a “Holiday On Horseback”—a fun day of games and friendly competition with the clients and their horses. It was great fun and we’re working on incorporating it into our schedule from now on.”

At Sonoma Valley Stables Hope Glynn takes the holidays seriously! “We decorate the arena and the barn for the holidays all the jumps look like presents. A giant Frosty the Snowman and Nutcrackers adorn the jumps and we even jump Christmas trees! Each horse has a stocking hung with care in hope that carrots will always end up in there!

Our horses get down time in November and December we only start jumping again a few weeks before Thermal in January. The week of Christmas we close the barn for riding and horses get to enjoy Ice Horse treatments massages and lots of pampering! We have a scoping clinic in December to check for gastric ulcers as well as do cleaning of sheaths and floating of teeth before the New Year.

With Susie Hutchinson it’s business as usual.  Susie keeps busy with clinics and keep her hoses legged up for Thermal.  “I am very boring.  With only a few outside clients I pretty much stay in the same routine all year!
